Opportunities to Give

The Bent Tree Foundation asks for and will be happy to accept your donations.  We anticipate many requests for partnering and for assistance, and we can only help as much as our available funds will permit.

To date, the Foundation has received several unrestricted donations.   A most generous restricted donation was offered to the Foundation to replace the beach playground equipment with new kid-safe designs and equipment. This very generous grant from the Greiner Family Foundation has done much to enhance the reconstructed beach area.  We are extremely grateful to the Greiner Family Foundation for their generosity.

Designated Foundation Projects

Scholarships / Grants for Pickens County Schools ***UPDATED***

The Bent Tree Foundation proudly announces a program providing scholarships for selected graduating seniors of Pickens County High School in the class of 2012. This program also provides grants for proposals that will enhance the educational experiences of our Pickens County students.

A scholarship applicant must be a graduating senior of Pickens County High School entering an accredited two year or four year post-secondary degree program or a one year certificate program.  Scholarship selection guidelines will be: financial need, academic achievement including GPA and SAT/ACT scores, community and school service including activities and athletics, written and/or oral expression.

Grants will be awarded to teachers and/or school staff for proposals of programs that will encourage and motivate students to focus their energy and time on their education and learning. Teachers and school staff will be asked to present proposals to the Bent Tree Foundation for their evaluation and selection.

One hundred percent of your donation will go toward Bent Tree Foundation scholarships and grants. The selection of scholarship/grant recipients and the determination of the amounts and number of awards will be at the discretion of the Foundation Scholarship/Grant Committee.

"Inaugural" Longest Day of Golf Fundraiser Benefit Scholarship/Grant Program was a Huge Success

You also have the option to donate $500 or more toward a scholarship (equivalent to the amount of donation) given in the memory, honor or name of person(s) designated by the donor.  We have already had donors take advantage of this opportunity. Our first such donor was Ray Perry, a long time Bent Tree property owner, who made a generous donation in memory of several members of his family. The Foundation is extremely grateful for such support as was offered by Ray thus enabling us to fulfill this important mission.  Note that for awards arising from these donations, the
d
onor may require additional criteria, e.g., school to be attended or course of study, etc.

Bent Tree Foundation is Seeking Volunteers

The Bent Tree Foundation is seeking enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to work on some key projects.  At the moment, our primary needs are for now-forming Fundraising and Publicity Committees. If you have time, talent, and energy to donate to either of these causes, we would love to hear from you.   (back to top of page)

Front Gate Beautification Project ***UPDATED***

Thanks to generous donations made via the Foundation, the Bent Tree Gardeners have recently been able to install a stamped concrete curb around the existing large island in front of the main gate and around the smaller area in front of the gate house joining the ends of existing concrete curbing. The style of stamp and color was selected to blend with the existing rock on the entrance gate. Rock drainage swales were created to redirect storm water from the road. The Gardeners have also been able to place appropriate plants in that area, thanks to the expertise of a local landscaping company.

Part of the Gardeners’ mission is to facilitate the beautification of Bent Tree Community common grounds. The first impression given to everyone entering the community is the area at the main gate. Our entrance was in a deteriorating condition due to improper drainage, rotting railroad ties and lack of suitable plant material. The improvements that have been made will serve to permanently improve the image of the community as well as to provide proper storm water drainage.

The Bent Tree Foundation is pleased to have been able to provide most of the funding for this project which adds to the beauty of our community and improves the first impression of all who come through the date.  (back to top of page)

Haiti Medical Mission

Bill Bapst, Chairman of the Bent Tree Foundation, presents Robie Arnold with a donation. Also pictured are Bud Mote, Bent Tree Director of Public Safety, and Mike King, Bent Tree General Manager

Robie Arnold, an employee of the Bent Tree Public Safety Department, went to Haiti in February to assist in a medical mission effort initiated through his church.  The Bent Tree Foundation approved a grant to help offset Robie’s personal expenses for undergoing this most difficult and worthy endeavor, and we established a designated Foundation fund to enable personal donations for any individuals wishing to support Robie on this mission of mercy.  We'd also like to note that many of Robie's colleagues in Public Safety generously donated a day of their vacation time so that he would be able to go on this mission trip without having to take an unpaid leave.

Click here to read a wonderful essay written by Robie about his journey entitled "There and Back, Again".

All of us involved with the Bent Tree Foundation bless Robie for undertaking this extremely worthwhile mission and we thank him for his and his church’s efforts to help the suffering people of Haiti. (back to top of page)

Stray Animal Care

All too often, stray animals - dogs and cats - are found roaming inside Bent Tree.  Public Safety personnel do a great job catching these animals and placing them in the kennel located in the trash collection area until an owner can be found.  Many times, however, these animals remain unidentified.  Often times they need medical care.  Immediately a small team of Bent Tree volunteers step in to assist.  They attempt to find the owner; but failing that, they make sure that the animals are fed and cared for by a veterinarian if necessary.   Until now, these medical/food expenses have been paid for out of the volunteers’ pockets.  Furthermore, on cold nights similar to what we have experienced in early 2010, they take the animals to their own homes in order to keep them warm and safe.

The Bent Tree Foundation would like to assist these volunteers by asking our generous Bent Tree community to dip into their hearts and their pocketbooks by contributing to the Bent Tree Foundation Stray Animal Care Fund.  It is our hope that enough money can be raised to defray the costs of medical care for these stray animals and possibly generate enough funds to buy or build a small hut or shed to comfortably house these animals during their temporary residence.  (back to top of page)

Bent Tree Community Supports C.A.R.E.S.  **UPDATED**

On July 30, the Bent Tree Foundation wrote to many in the local community asking for your financial support for C.A.R.E.S. on behalf of children in Pickens County returning to school. We described that C.A.R.E.S., a charity that helps local residents obtain and maintain basic needs for their families, was working hard to give every child in their program a gift card to take shopping before school started on August 3.

Article: Read About How C.A.R.E.S. Back-to-School Program Helps Families

We are delighted to report that Bent Tree residents responded generously and provided C.A.R.E.S. with nearly 30% of the total funding they sought for this extremely worthwhile cause. As promised, 100% of every designated donation to the Bent Tree Foundation was transferred directly to C.A.R.E.S.  (back to top of page)
